Anthara Gange

Antara Gange "Dakshina kashi"

Kolar, Karnataka, India.  Dec 8, 2012

ಹೇ ಬ್ಬಾ ಗಿ ಲು  (Main Entrance)

Legend:

According to the local people around Antara Gange the legend goes like this: A saint used to go to Kashi every year to see lord Shiva and on return would sit in Antara Gange for tapas (meditation). When he grew old the trips to Kashi became tough. Lord Shiva was pleased with the saint and gave him darshan (appeared to him). Lord Shiva gave the saint a bamboo stick and told him not to make anymore laborious visits to uttara Kashi (Northern Kashi), instead dig the bamboo in ground in Antara Gange and you will have your own gange and the place henceforth will be famously known as dakshina Kashi (Southern Kashi). The saint put the bamboo in ground and water started flowing from where the bamboo stick was digged. The water flows till date, hence the name "Antara Gange".

Summary:

Mode of transport: Bajaj Avenger 200cc
Route: NH4 from K R Puram.
Starting Point: Bangalore
Journey Time: 1hrs 30mins
Lunch: At Shanti Sagar in Kolar.

Details:

Started at 12:00pm. Road was excellent, did 110kmph almost throughout, traffic was minimum and there were hardly any obstructions (road humps, pedestrians, tractors etc). At Kolar got lost a bit trying to take a shortcut suggested by localites. Reached Antara Gange by 1:40pm. Temple of Lord Shiva and Antara Gange are midway on a hill. The path to temple is very well laid out with wide stone steps.

ದಾ ರಿ (Path to Temple)

It was a steady and easy climb up to the temple with peaceful nature around. There were lot of monkeys in the area who are not scared of humans, so beware and do not expose your eatables, you might lose them. Monkeys will just snatch them out of your hands or will scare you to throw your eatables at them. I had no bags, no eatables, just my mobile phone to take snaps.

Scenery

At the top, there are three temples:
  1. Lord Ganesha temple in the middle of a pond.
  2. Lord Ganesha and Nandi temple above the pond. Antara Gange (water) flows from Nandi's (Bull) mouth.
  3. Lord Shiva temple.
You can take bath in the pond and swim/walk to Lord Ganesha temple or walk over the stone path to the temple. I took the stone path. Then went up to Lord Shiva temple, prayed and sat there for a while.

Shiva Temple:

Behind the temple is a trek path to go up the hill. At first it appeared to be a short path to a boulder. I went up the path and sat on that huge stone for a while. Looked around and realized that the path (not obvious) went further up. Started climbing and soon was seeing some beautiful scenery. Huge rocks leaning on each other, forming caves.

Rocks/Scenery:

This was a good hike after a long long time for me. At the peak, slept on a rock, under a tree for a while in cool breeze and started climbing down.

Had late lunch at Shanti Sagar in Kolar(on the highway, NH4) and headed back to Bangalore at 5:00pm. Was in Bangalore at 7:00pm. Rode slow (about 60kmph) on return. It was a good day trip away from work.
